Subaru SUVs are renowned for their comfortable accommodations, advanced safety features, and great ride quality. And thanks to attributes like Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, X-MODE® traction management, and tall ground clearance, they're more capable off the road than most class competitors. Subaru Wilderness takes that capability to the next level for outdoor enthusiasts seeking adventures beyond the asphalt.
More than just a unique appearance trim, Subaru Wilderness provides specialized equipment to help you reach and enjoy new places and bring you home safely. The Wilderness brand began with the Subaru Outback in 2021, expanding to the Subaru Forester the following year. Now, it has arrived in the 2026 Subaru Crosstrek as part of its third-generation redesign.
Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness
The Subaru Crosstrek is a versatile subcompact crossover that provides practicality and capability with minimal exterior space requirements. It has 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second row and 54.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
The Crosstrek Wilderness gets an upgraded 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, a revised final drive ratio, and a strong rear differential help improve handling and grip on low-speed climbs. Subaru X-MODE® optimizes the throttle, transmission ratios, and AWD engagement for surefooted traction in low friction circumstances.
The Crosstrek's terrain-tuned suspension increases ground clearance from 8.7 to 9.3 inches. Additionally, greater approach/departure angles, protective body cladding, a front skid plate, and Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires provide more confidence traversing obstacles. The addition of a transmission oil cooler increases the towing capacity to 3,500 pounds. When you reach your destination, the Crosstrek Wilderness's reinforced roof rails have a 700-pound static load limit, perfect for a rooftop tent.
Subaru Forester Wilderness
If you're seeking roomier passenger accommodations and more cargo space while retaining easy maneuverability, check out the Subaru Forester. This compact crossover offers 27 cubic feet of cargo space, expanding to 69.1 with the rear seats folded.
The Forester has similar terrain features to the Crosstrek Wilderness, including Yokohama GEOLANDAR® all-terrain tires, 9.2-inches of ground clearance, and a dual-function X-MODE® system with Low Speed / Low Ratio Gradient Control. It also has raised roof rails with an 800-pound stationary load limit. A notable addition to the Forester Wilderness is the 180-degree Front-View Monitor, a forward-facing camera system that helps avoid trail obstacles obstructed from view.
Subaru Outback Wilderness
From its early days as a Subaru Legacy trim level and the "World's First Sport Utility Wagon," the Outback has been a critical component of Subaru's transition into the adventurous brand we know today. The Wilderness trim is the most significant evolution of the Outback's formula since becoming its own nameplate.
The Outback Wilderness offers all the features mentioned above, including dual-function X-MODE®, all-terrain tires, reinforced roof rails (700-pound stationary limit), and a 180-degree front-facing camera. However, it delivers more potent performance, courtesy of a turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER® engine with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. It also boasts 9.5 inches of ground clearance.
As a midsize crossover, the Subaru Outback has the roomiest passenger accommodations. It also has an expansive cargo area with up to 75.6 cubic feet of capacity and a hands-free power liftgate.
